Makita XCU02Z/XCU02PT 18V X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36V) Cordless Chain Saw
Makita XCU02Z/XCU02PT 18V X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36V) Cordless Chain Saw is lightweight and portable, battery operated chain saw.
Main difference between Makita XCU02Z and Makita XCU02PT models is that first one (XCU02Z) is bare tool only, and second one (XCU02PT) comes with two 18V 5Ah LXT lithium batteries and dual port charger.
For people often having the need to cut through trees and branches in their backyard gardens, such cordless chain saw is excellent alternative to similar gas operated chain saws.
Published: August 17,2019.
For people already having two 18V LXT lithium-ion batteries and corresponding battery charger, bare tool model is highly recommended and as such, it is not a large investment.
On the other hand, for people already not having required batteries and charger(s), cordless chain saw kit is highly recommended, since total price of individual items (bare tool, two 18V 5Ah batteries and dual port charger) is far cheaper than price of individual items combined. This is especially important if you plan to purchase Makita's tools in the future - by having two 5Ah batteries and charger, any future purchase will be rather cheap, having in mind that Makita tools are high quality tools built to last.
Makita 36V Cordless Chain Saw Features and Specifications
Maximum chain speed is 1650 ft/min (8.3 m/s, 500 m/min). Saw chain pitch is 3/8" with 46 drive links. Saw chain can be adjusted easily with no tools required.
Guide bar is 12 inches (~30 cm) long and it is 'classic' sprocket nose bar.
When loaded with two 5Ah batteries, chain saw weighs ~10.1 pounds (~4.6 kg) - it is light enough to easily operate with both hands, and it is heavy enough to 'absorb' all shocks and vibrations during normal use.
During operation, this cordless chain saw is very quiet, producing around 89 dB, which is much quieter than gas operated chain saws, which produce 120 or even more dB - excellent reason for shifting from gas operated to electric chain saws, at least for home gardeners.
Being the cordless tool, unit has zero emissions and the maintenance is significantly reduced - user must ensure that the chain is adjusted, sharp and lubricated and that the batteries are charged. And that is it - there's no engine oil to change (four stroke engines) or add in the fuel (two stroke engines), no spark plug to clean and/or replace, no air filter or muffler to clean etc.
Makita's cordless chain saw, batteries and chargers come with 3-year limited warranty, which is great.
Makita BL1850B-2 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 5.0Ah Battery Twin Pack
A pair of fully charger 18V lithium ion batteries provides quite a punch, when required.
LXT lithium-ion batteries can be found as 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 Ah batteries and can be used in many Makita's cordless tools that are compatible with 18V LXT batteries - cordless drills, grinders, fans, vacuums etc.
BL1850 batteries (5.0Ah) for example, provide up to 65% more run time per single full charge, when compared to BL1830 (3.0Ah battery).
5.0Ah batteries can be fully charged in 45 minutes, while, for example, 3.0Ah batteries can be fully charged in 30 minutes.
In any case, it is good practice to let the batteries cool down slightly after being fully charged or discharged - they will last longer.
By purchasing cordless chain saw kit, one can save plenty of money. However, over time and if used frequently, performances of these batteries degrade and they must be replaced by either purchasing a pair of new batteries or, perhaps even better, by purchasing some other Makita tool as kit, which contains these batteries. Smart, right? :)

Makita DC18RD 18V Lithium-Ion Dual Port Rapid Optimum Charger

- it charges two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 3.0 Ah batteries in 30 minutes,
- it charges two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 4.0 Ah batteries in 40 minutes,
- it charges two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 5.0 Ah batteries in 45 minutes.
And even better, it comes with built-in USB port for charging portable electronic devices like smartphones.
When ordered separately, note that there are models with one, two and four ports.

Oregon 54-026 Chain Saw Bar And Chain Oil
For chain saw to work as it should, saw bar and chain must be properly lubricated.
Good chain saw bar and chain oil maximizes engine power, decrease friction and improves cutting time. Cordless chain saws are low maintenance tools, but they do require some maintenance!
By creating oil film, oil prevents or at least decreases wear or scuffing of chain links and bars, while protecting metal parts against corrosion and rust and resists to build up of deposits such as pitch, sap or gum.
Some people use motor oil instead of special chain oil - chain oil is thicker and 'tackier' than motor oil and it is fairly cheap when compared with a new chain.
Don't go cheap with chain oil!
One of the best and for that reason, one of the most popular chain oils is 'Oregon 54-026 Chain Saw Bar And Chain Oil'. If you need one, you can order it from Amazon or some other online store.

Makita HCU02C1 36V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Chain Saw
For people often working away from any for of mains power, Makite manufactures line of 36V batteries, chargers and of course, tools.
Makita HCU02C1 cordless chain saw is very similar to Makita XCU02Z/XCU02PT, except that HCU02C1 model is powered via one 36V battery and XCU02Z/XCU02PT are powered using a pair of 18V batteries.
Using single 36V battery have some advantages, but if you already own 18V LXT batteries and tools or plan on owning them, go for 18V cordless chain saws. If you already have 36V LXT batteries, go for HCU02C1 chain saw model.
For more information about this model, check Makita HCU02C1 36V Lithium-Ion Cordless Chain Saw Kit Amazon link (link opens in the new window).
Long Story Short - Makita XCU02Z/XCU02PT cordless chain saws are not maintenance free chain saws, but they are used and maintained more easily than gas models. Also, they don't require mains power to present on site to get the job done.
In the end, which one to choose? If you don't have 18V LXT batteries and want Makita cordless chain saw, you have to purchase full kit - without batteries, these chain saws simply don't work.
But, with such great batteries, and a large garden, other Makita cordless tools can come very handy - cordless leaf blowers, cordless lawn mowers, cordless drill, etc.
